The Kitchen Cupboard

The Kitchen Cupboard is a food distribution program that provides food to individuals and families in need. The Kitchen Cupboard opened in March 2011, and originally anticipated that they would be serving between 200 and 250 families each year. In 2013, we provided food to more than 1200 un-duplicated families in Bennington, Vermont.

The Bennington Free Clinic is a medical clinic that provides free primary medical care, care coordination, and referral to uninsured adult residents of Bennington County and the surrounding area whose incomes are under 400% of federal poverty. We also screen all of our patients to determine if they are eligible for health insurance and other methods of accessing health care and we work with them to ensure they can become enrolled. We do not provide emergency care.

The Greater Bennington Food and Fuel Fund is a discretionary fund which provides assistance for families experiencing financial crises limiting their ability to pay for shelter, utilities, food and other basic needs. Started many decades ago by local clergy in the greater Bennington area, the Food and Fuel Fund is now a program of Greater Bennington Interfaith Community Services.

Our mission is “to help provide the basic human needs of food, shelter, and health care for those in the greater Bennington area unable to meet those needs.” GBICS grew out of the Bennington Interfaith Food and Fuel Fund, which came into existence in 1973. In 2001, the organization incorporated and successfully sought IRS 501(c)(3), not-for-profit status. GBICS was overseen for many years by clergy from the faith communities that make up the Greater Bennington Interfaith Council. In 2009, the Bennington Free Clinic was established and the Board of Directors was expanded to include community members. The Kitchen Cupboard food distribution program was established in 2011.
